Since the State of Maryland follows the 2015 International Residential Code, all new one and two family homes must be built with residential sprinkler systems. While this has caused fire officials and building developers to butt heads, Hagerstown Fire Chief Steve Lohr argues that cost is not a problem.
“I would argue from a fire protection standpoint that, typically, a homeowner would spend more on a carpet or linoleum upgrade than they would the total cost it would be to add a sprinkler system during construction.”

While a sprinkler system discharges from 12 to 24 gallons of water per minute, fire hoses discharge up to 1,000 gallons of water per minute at a much higher pressure. So while the area that was in flames will get wet, the rest of your home will remain relatively untouched, saving you time and money down the road.
